Matt O'Brien grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho and graduated from Idaho State University in 1990. Kim (Wartgow) O'Brien grew up in Minden, Nevada, and graduated from the College of Southern Idaho in 1988 and Idaho State University in 1990. Matt and Kim were married in 1989 and joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ in 1990. They have served with Campus Crusade for Christ in the following capacities: 

• World Headquarters in Orlando, Florida, from 1991 to 1993
• In Colorado Springs with Campus Crusade's ministry resourcing the countries of the former Soviet Union from 1993 to 1995
• Local Director at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls from 1995-1998
• Matt trained Campus Crusade staff throughout the Greater Northwest Region from 1998 to 2003.
• Regional Director (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Utah) from 2003-2007.
• The O'Brien family has been very involved in coordinating and leading summer mission trips to Japan and Alaska.
